Isotretinoin: Effective Treatment for Severe Acne

Mechanism of Action:

• It inhibits the functioning of the sebaceous glands, reducing oil production and preventing the development of acne.
• Chemically related to retinoic acid and retinol (Vitamin A).
• It alters the cell cycle, differentiation, survival and apoptosis, reducing sebum production and inhibiting the growth of acne bacteria.

Usage:

• Treats acne, a common side effect of anabolic/androgenic steroid use during steroid therapy.

Dosage:

• 0.5-1 mg/kg of body weight per day, divided into two separate doses. In exceptional cases, higher dosages of up to 2 mg/kg/day are recommended.

• Reduces sebum production to treat acne.
• Prevents clogged skin pores.
• Reduces the growth of skin bacteria.
• It has anti-inflammatory effects.

Side Effects:

• Contraindicated in women of childbearing potential due to risks to fetal development.

• During the isotretinoin cycle, avoid alcohol consumption and vitamin A supplements.

• Half-life: 7-39 hours.
• Frequency of intake: 2 times a day.
