The Benefits of HCG: What It Is and How It Works
HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is not an anabolic/androgenic steroid, but a natural hormonal protein that develops in the placenta of a pregnant woman. HCG is produced in the urine of pregnant women, as it is excreted unchanged into the blood through the kidneys. Commercially available HCG is sold as a dry substance and can be used by both men and women.
In women , injectable HCG promotes ovulation by stimulating the final stages of egg development. In men , HCG stimulates the production of androgen hormones, including testosterone. For this reason, athletes use injectable HCG to increase testosterone production.
How to Use HCG
HCG is often used in combination with anabolic/androgenic steroids during or after a treatment cycle. Because the body needs a certain amount of time to naturally restart testosterone production, after stopping steroids, the athlete can experience a difficult transition phase, often leading to significant loss of strength and muscle mass.
Taking HCG immediately after steroid treatment helps reduce this condition, as it quickly and reliably stimulates testosterone production in the testicles. In cases of testicular atrophy caused by high doses and prolonged use, HCG helps quickly restore the testicles to their original size. Some athletes even use HCG for two or three weeks halfway through steroid treatment, as this is when the greatest gains in strength and muscle mass are observed.
Although HCG stimulates endogenous testosterone production, it doesn’t help fully restore the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, which remains in a refractory state after prolonged steroid use. For this reason, experienced athletes often take Clomid and Clenbuterol after HCG use or immediately switch to another steroid cycle.
HCG dosage
The HCG package insert clearly states that HCG “has no effect on fat mobilization, appetite, or body fat distribution.” It also states that HCG is not effective as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of obesity and does not enhance fat loss beyond that determined by calorie restriction.
A single injection of 6,000 IU of HCG resulted in a six-day increase in testosterone levels. A dose of 1,500 IU increased testosterone levels by 250–300% compared to the starting level. Athletes should inject one vial of HCG every five days. Since testosterone levels remain elevated for several days, it is not necessary to inject HCG more than once every five days. The effective dosage for athletes is generally between 2,000 and 5,000 IU per injection, which should be administered every five days.
HCG should only be taken for a few weeks. If taken for weeks at a time and at high doses, the testes may respond poorly to subsequent HCG treatment and endogenous LH production, resulting in permanent gonadal dysfunction.
Side Effects of HCG
HCG can cause side effects similar to those of injectable testosterone. Increased testosterone production is accompanied by increased estrogen levels, which can lead to gynecomastia (temporary breast enlargement in men). To prevent this, many athletes combine HCG with an anti-estrogen.
Other side effects may include frequent erections, increased sexual desire, and, in high doses, acne vulgaris and water retention. This last point is particularly important because water retention caused by HCG use can make muscles appear swollen and watery.
Athletes who have already increased their endogenous testosterone levels through Clomid use and intend to subsequently take HCG may experience significant water retention and feminization symptoms, such as gynecomastia and fat accumulation on the hips. This is due to the fact that high testosterone levels lead to rapid conversion to estrogen.
HCG can also affect growth in very young athletes by prematurely closing the epiphyseal growth plates. Other side effects include mood swings and high blood pressure.
HCG Administration Method
HCG is a dry powdered substance typically used as a tablet. Each package includes a vial containing an injectable solution containing isotonic sodium chloride. After both vials are opened using a sterile technique, the solution is injected into the HCG vial and mixed with the dry substance. The resulting solution is then injected intramuscularly.
If only part of the substance is injected, the remainder should be stored in the refrigerator. It is important not to store unmixed HCG in the refrigerator, but to keep it away from light and at a temperature below 25°C.
Conclusion
HCG is a powerful ally for athletes wishing to maintain testosterone levels during and after steroid use, preventing side effects such as testicular atrophy and loss of strength. However, it must be used with caution, adhering to appropriate dosages and understanding its potential side effects. Medical supervision is always recommended to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the treatment.
